What Is Plus?

If you ask a Group of members "What is Plus?" you could get quite a few answers. This is because Plus caters for many different interests and has activities to suit everyone.

Plus is a multi-activities organisation for people aged between 18 and 36. Every week throughout the country members meet to participate in activities ranging from cinema trips to ice skating, from quizzes to sports, from charity events to discos. Each Group in the country has its own events run by its own members as committees. These events are open to all members and Plus thrives on inter-Group visits. These give members the chance to meet new people and try new things.

Every year, Groups throughout the country raise money for local and national charities. Every member who takes part has a great deal of fun and of course the charities benefit too! A trophy is awarded every year at the National Conference to the Group who raises the most money for charity.

Plus holds no allegiance to any other organisation, political or religious. We are not associated with any over-l8's holiday club or dating agency. Plus is an organisation for making new friends and meeting old ones. Each Group decides a programme of events so people do not just come down to be entertained, but can sit and get to know each other.

Every Group is part of an Area. The Area committee is made up of Group members and they are elected annually at a local conference. The Area committee also run events on behalf of Group members which tend to take place at a weekend. Sometimes members from other Areas join in as well.

Each member of Plus is different in background, occupation and hobbies. However, we all have one common interest which is to meet new friends, try new things and belong to something worthwhile. We are a happy, fun-loving crowd and you will soon become one of us.

Plus is many things. It has its serious side and its light-hearted side. As Plus is run by its members for its members, the events are constantly changing to reflect their interests. The organisation has changed a great deal since it was opened as a debating society for young men in the 1940's. It will continue to change as we move into the millennium and beyond. All committees welcome ideas for new events. Perhaps your ideas will have a large part to play in the continued development of the Federation.

No amount of written publicity can do justice to the unique atmosphere of Plus. It is probably the only organisation where you have a real chance to meet people from all over the country and have a say in the way your Federation is run.

Plus is different to other organisations in that it expands your social life and helps you to learn new skills. As a member you can attend Area or National training events covering things like presentation, public speaking, committee positions and other life skills at a fraction of the commercial cost. In fact, proper training in these vital areas is so rare nowadays that many commercial organisations are pleased to welcome people who have actually been trained, however superficially.
